He was the son of Christopher and Sarah Ann Seal and the brother of Florence, Charles, Sarah Ann and Alfred Seal. In 1911 they lived at 38 Cornhill Street Nottingham. Anna Seal later lived at 22 Bobbers Mill Road Nottingham. William married his wife Alvina Wilson at Nottingham in 1911, they went on to have a son William born on 25th June 1912. At the time of William death the family were living at 56 Cantab Terrace, Archer Street, Hyson Green. Following his death his widow received a letter from the War Office dated 15th February 1916 stating she would recieve a pension of 15 shiilings a week for her and her one child with effect from 21st February 1916. His widow Alvina later re married in Nottingham in 1920 to Harold Wharmby and lived at 2 Speechley Street Nottingham.
Lance Corporal William Seal, enlisted on 1st March 1909, he was 20yrs and lived at 38 Cornhill St, Hyson Green, he was a lace threader working for J J Birkin and Company. He signed on for 4 years service with the territorial army and served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He was reengaged for a further year on 19th February 1913 and a further year on 4th February 1914. He was embodied on 5th August 1914 and promoted to Lance Corporal on 14th August 1914. He landed in France on 28th February 1915 and was killed in action on 31st July 1915. He is buried in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery. He had served for 6 yrs and 153 days with the colours.
In memoriam published 31st July 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SEAL. – In loving memory of our dear son, Lance-Corporal W. H. Seal, 1/7th Robin Hoods, killed in action, July 31st, 1915. Nobly he lived, nobly he died. Sadly missed. – Mother, father, and family. “SEAL. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Lance-Corporal W. H. Seal, 1/7th Robin Hoods, killed in action July 31st, 1915 (late player for Basford United).
