Horace was born on 25th August 1895 at Hyson Green, he was the son of the late Frederick George a steam engine fitter and Mary Ann Plowright née Ducker of 19 Bateman Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father Frederick George was born in 1864 in New Basford and his mother Mary Ann Ducker was born in 1863 in Nottingham, their marriage is recorded in the Nottingham Registration area in 1887, they had 8 children , however sadly three died in infancy prior to 1911, their surviving children were : - Ethel b1891, Kate b1892, Horace b1895, Frederick George b1897 and Cyril b1900, all the children were born in Hyson Green. Horace's father Frederick George died in Nottingham in 1909 he was 46 yrs of age . In the 1911 census the family are living at 19 Bateman Street, Hyson Green and are shown as Mary Ann 48 yrs widow , head of the family , living with her 5 children , Ethel 20 yrs a draughtsman's copier in lace manufacturing, Kate 18 yrs also a draughtsman's copier in lace manufacturing, Frederick George 14 yrs a card puncher, Horace 15 yrs a spring puncher and Cyril 11 yrs a scholar.
Horace enlisted in Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters , he was with the 2/7th (Robin Hood Rifles ) battalion when he was wounded in Dublin, probably on 26th April 1916. News of his wounding and photograph were published on 11th May 1916 in the local press. He transferred to 2/8th Battalion and again to 2/5th with which he was serving at the time of his capture on 21st March 1918 he was captured at Bullecourt and died of pneumonia while a prisoner of war and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery (grave ref. XII.F.17). His brother Cyril also served during the 'Great War' he was a driver in the Royal Engineers, he had enlisted on 15th May 1917 his age was 17 yrs and 359 days, he was placed into the reserves and mobilised on 11th May 1918, he went out to France on 3rd September 1918, he was demobilised and discharged from the Army on 8th July 1919.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 30 January 1919: 'Plowright. Private Horace Plowright, 2/5th Sherwood Foresters, died September 29th 1918 of pneumonia while a prisoner of war in Germnay, age 23 years. Second son of Mary Ann and the late Frederick George Plowright, 19 Bateman Street. Mother, sisters, brothers Fred at Broxham (?) and Cyril in France.'
