George Ernest (Ernest) Nicholson was born in 1900 in Gedling and was the son of John Nicholson and his second wife, Harriett nee Allen. John, a fish and chip dealer, and his first wife, Martha Ann Silkstone (b. 1863), were married in 1885; their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration area. They had a son Thomas b1886 Carlton Scroop, Lincolnshire. Martha Nicholson died in 1894 aged 31 yrs; the death was registered in the Grantham District Registration area. His father John was born in 1859 in Houghton on the Hill, Lincolnshire, and his mother, Harriett Allen, was born in 1868 in Fulbeck, Lincolnshire. They were married in 1899 in Nottingham and had three children: May b1899 Carlton Scroop, Lincolnshire, George Ernest b1900 Gedling and Sydney b1908 Gedling. In the 1911 census the family are living at 221 Radford Road, Nottingham and are shown as John 52 yrs a fish and chip shop dealer who is living with his wife Harriett 43yrs, his son by his first marriage, Thomas 25yrs a warehouseman, and the three children of his second marriage, May 12yrs a swiss lace maker, Ernest 10yrs a scholar and Sydney 3yrs. The family home was still at the same address when George Ernest died in 1917.
Gunner George Ernest Nicholson, enlisted at Nottingham. He was obviously under age - he was born in 1900 and was 10 yrs of age in the 1911 census - and was only 17 yrs old when he died. He served with “B” Battery, 115th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, and died of wounds which had been received in action on 14th December 1917 at Salonika. He is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery (grave ref. E.972).
