William Miller was born in 1886 at Radford and was the son of James a bricklayer and Ellen Miller née Linford of 62, St. Paul's Avenue, Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father James was born in 1861 at Buckingham, his mother Ellen Linford was born in 1861 at Buckingham, Kent they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Nottingham, Glyn b1883, William b1886, Nellie b1890, Charles b1892, Matilda b1894, John b1896, Robert b1899, Mary Jane b1900, James b1907 and Leonard b1908. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 5 Holland Street, Hyson Green, they are shown as James Miller 49 yrs a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Ellen 48 yrs and their children, Nellie 21 yrs a cigarette packer, Charles 19 yrs a fitter, Matilda 16 yrs a cigarette packer, John 15 yrs an upholsterer, Robert 12 yrs a scholar, Mary Jane 10 yrs a scholar, James 4 yrs and Leonard 3 yrs of age. William married his wife Ada Florence Speed (born 12th September 1887 at Hyson Green,) they lived at 9 Haughton Place, Hyson Green, they had the following children, Glyn born 5th March 1911, Betty Florence born 24th February 1912, Mary Helen born 14th May 1913 and Minnie born 26th July 1914. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Haughton Place, Hyson Green and are shown as William Miller 25 yrs a painter and paper hanger, he is living with his wife Ada 24 yrs and their son Glyn 1 month old. Following his death his widow Ada was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 29th October 1917. His widow re married in 1923 to Allan Fitton (the marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district,) they lived at New Row, Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, Loughborough.
Private William Miller, enlisted at Derby and served with the 11th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action 9th April 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
In memoriam published 9th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MILLER. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. William Miller, killed in action April 9th, 1917. One long sad year out hearts still sore, as time goes on we miss him more. – Ever remembered by sorrowing wife and children. “MILLER. – In loving memory of Pte. William Miller, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Miller, 62, St. Paul's-avenue, fell in action April 9th, 1917. Sleep on, dear son, and take thy rest, they miss you most who loved you best. – From sorrowing mother, father, brothers, sisters, brother Bob in France.” Above in memoriam are courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918. His brother Private John Miller, served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium Another brother Glyn Miller served with the North Staffordshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 13th January 1917 and is buried at Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
