James was born in 1895 in Nottingham and was the son of the late Joseph Copeland McGraw a clock maker and Eliza McGraw, née Pearson of 30 Lambert Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham, His father Joseph Copeland McGraw was born in 1873 in Leeds and his mother Eliza Phoebe Pearson was born in 1872 in Nottingham , they were married in 1893 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children , their first was James born 1895 in Nottingham and the remaining were all born in Leeds, they were Maggie b1896, Elsie b1898, Nellie b1899, Joe b1903, Donald b1905 and Dolly b1907. In 1909 his father Joseph Copeland McGraw died aged 36 yrs in Leeds. In the 1911 census we find the family living at 6 Institute Street, Hartley Road, Nottingham Eliza is shown as 37 yrs a widow and charwoman, she is living with her children James 16 yrs an errand boy, Maggie 15 yrs at home no occupation, Elsie 13 yrs an errand girl, Nelie 12 yrs a scholar, Joe 8 yrs a scholar, Donald 6 yrs a scholar and Dolly 4 yrs.
Private James McGraw, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 and was killed in action on 12th August 1918. He is buried in Fouqueries Churchyard Extension.
In memoriam published 12th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “McGRAW. – In loving memory of Pte. J. McGraw, killed in action August 12th, 1918, aged 23. A day of remembrance sad to recall. – From sister Maggie & brother Tom. “McGRAW. – In loving memory of my dear son, Pte. J. McGraw, killed in action August 12th, 1918. This day brings back sad memories, our loved on gone to rest, and those who think of him to-day are those who loved him best. – From sorrowing mother, brothers ,and sisters. “McGRAW. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. J. McGraw killed in action August 12th, 1918.
