Family History

Samuel Grundy was born in 1884 at Radford and was the son of John William a lace curtain maker and Sarah Grundy néé Pass of 71 Miall Street, Nottingham. His father John William was born in 1861 at Radford and his mother Sarah Pass was born in 1852 also in Radford, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have the following children all born in Radford, Annie b1881, Samuel b1884 and Minnie b1885 Samuel Grundy married his wife Edith Ball on 14th April 1906 at Radford, they went on to have two children, Beatrice born 28th June 1907 and Harold born 13th June 1913, both born at Nottingham, they lived at 6 Frieston Street, Bobbersmill, Nottingham Following his death his widow Edith was granted a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence in respect of her and her two children, to commence from 14th January 1918 His widow later remarried and became of Edith Bunker (formerly Grundy), of The Police Station, Glenfield, Leicester.

Military History

Gunner Samuel Grundy enlisted on 8th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 32 yrs and 2 months, his address as 6 Freiston Street, Bobbersmill, Nottingham and his occupation as that of a lace maker, his next of kin was his wife Edith of the same address. He was posted to the reserves that day and was mobilised on 9th June 1916, posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery he landed n France on 11th January 1917. He was posted to the 221 Siege battery Royal Garrison Artillery on 26th August 1916 and was wounded in action and admitted to hospital on 4th July 1917, he died from his wounds at 53 rd casualty clearing station on 7th July 1917. He is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery, Nord.
