William Hancock Cottee was born in 1887 at Nottingham. William married his wife Emma Hopcroft (born 14th December 1871 ) in 1907 at Nottingham, they lived at 61 Lambert Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham they had a son Claude William born 5th July 1910. Following his death his widow Emma was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 10th January 1916 His widow Emma went to to re marry on 6th January 1917 to William Henry Carrier a coal miner and lived at 3 Grange Road,Toll Bar, Bentley, Doncaster.
Lance Corporal William Hancock Cottee, enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 9th Battalion Rifle Brigade, he was killed by German shellfire on 20th June 1915. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres (Panel 46-48 and 50).
In memoriam published 20th June 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “COTTEE. – In loving memory of Lance-Corporal W. H. Cottee, Rifle Brigade, killed in action June 20th, 1915.
