He was the son of James and Ruth Cope and the brother of Emma, Susan, Lizzie, Maud and Vincent Cope. In 1901 they lived at 23 Bobbers Mill Road Nottingham. In 1911 Arthur was resident in the Bagthorpe Workhouse Nottingham.
Arthur Cope was probably a reservist as he was listed in 1911 as an Army pensioner. He would have been mobilised on the outbreak of war and went to France with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 2 November 1914. At 5 am on 12 March 1915 the German's shelled Battalion headquarters and advance in overwhelming numbers. The battalion was pushed back 150 yards to a rear trench. The enemy continued to advance but were thrown into disorder by Private Rivers (VC) and counter attacks by the battalion. The battalion gained its former trench by 7 am but at great cost. At 9 pm the battalion was withdrawn to the support trench and a new defensive line. Arthur was killed at some point in the day and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial France. John Morse
