Harry Morris Betts was born in 1883 at Radford and was the son of the late John Thomas Betts a lace manufacturer and Julia Betts nee Robinson of 70 Burford Road, Nottingham. His father John Thomas was born in 1854 at Basford, he died in 1903 aged 49 yrs, his mother Julia Robinson was born in Basford in 1859, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, George Kilbourne b1884 Carrington, Janet Clara b1885 Carrington, Harry Morrice b1883 Radford and Annie Winifred b1889 Hyson Green. In the 1911 census the family are living at 70 Burford Road, Nottingham, they are shown as Julia Betts 52 yrs a widow, she is living with her children George Kilbourne 27 yrs a lace merchants clerk, Janet Clara 26 no occupation listed, Harry Morrice 24 yrs a lace draughtsman and Annie Winifred 22 yrs no occupation listed.
Private Harry Morrice Betts enlisted into the territorial army on 1st March 1909 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 1 month, his address was 70 Burford Road, Nottingham and he gave his occupation as that of a curtain draughtsman, his next of kin was his mother Julia of the same address. He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He attended several summer camps and on 5th August 1914 he was embodied into the army. He went to France on 27th February 1915, he was killed in action on 13th October 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
