Ernest Edwin was born in 1895 in Basford, he was the son of Ernest Edwin a colliery labourer and Lydia Straw née Pinder of 12, Leonard St, Bagnall, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Ernest Edwin was born in 1865 in Bulwell , his mother Lydia Pinder was born in 1867 in Basford, they were married in Nottingham in 1889 and went on to have 4 children , all of whom were born in Basford , they were Annie b1891, Ernest Edwin b1895, Lilley b1899 and Frank b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 12 Leonard Street, Bulwell and are shown as Ernest Edwin 46 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Lydia 44 yrs and their 4 children , Annie 20 yrs a blouse machinist, Ernest Edwin 16 yrs a coal miner, Lilley 12 yrs and Frank 4 yrs.

Military History

Rifleman Ernest Edwin Straw, enlisted in Nottingham and served with “A” Company, 2nd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he landed in France on 4th January 1915 , he was killed in action by a sniper on 17th February 1916. He is buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay grave reference 1.D.33

Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 17th February 1917 reads :- “STRAW. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Rfn. E. Straw, K.R.R., killed by sniper February 17th, 1916.
