Ernest was the son of Thomas a foundry furnace man by trade and Mary Ann Hird (née Bowers). He had two siblings George Willie born 1893 and Alice born 1902. In 1911 the family was living at Newton's Yard West Stockwith.

He was buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Normandy, France.
