He was the son of the Rev. John Philip Smith Rector of Hockerton, and Mrs. Mary A. Smith, of 8, York View, Pocklington, York (CWGC). Rev Smith (b. 1848) and his wife had five children; the two eldest were Janet Romanis and Ian McNaughton who at the time of the 1891 census, when Rev Smith was the vicar of Street, Devon, were aged 2 and 1 respectively. He was vicar at Whixley, Yorkshire, from 1896 to 1913; at the time of the 1901 census there were four children at home: Janet R (12), Philip GD (3), Margaret JP (1), Euna BL (8 months) Their eldest son, Ian, was probably away at school. At the time of the 1911 census Rev Smith and his wife were living alone in the vicarage; Philip (13) was away at school at St Olave, York. Rev Smith was rector of Hockerton from 1913-1915, living in the rectory, although he died at 18 Regent Street, Nottingham, on 28 August 1915. The memorial in St Nicholas' church to Rev Smith and his son, Philip St George Duncan, suggests that his son was known as 'Duncan'.
