William Wainwright Spencer was born in 1896 in Shireoaks, his father being John Henry Spencer and his mother, Harriet Spencer. He was one of four children. His father was a Colliery blacksmith and William worked on colliery machinery.

He was killed in action on 21 March 1918 age 22.
