Family History

Bernard Harvey was the son of Emma Harvey, and the late Thomas Harvey. He was born at Shireoaks, near Worksop, Notts in 1890. His father died four years later in 1894. His mother, Emma, went on to marry Thomas’s younger brother, Enoch, at the start of 1901 at Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield. Worksop Guardian 23 August 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Harvey, Laughton Road Dinnington, have received official intimations accompanied with the King’s message of condolence and sympathy that their son, Corpl. Bernard Harvey, Y, and L., Regiment, previously reported missing, died of wounds received on March 25th of this year. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Harvey and family in this their heavy trouble. They have two other sons serving in France. Bernard was well known in the district, and esteemed and beloved by all who knew him.

Military History

Worksop Guardian 19 April 1918 We also regret to record the death in the fighting in France of Corpl. Bernard Harvey, M.M., of the York and Lancaster Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey, of Laughton Road, Dinnington. Corpl. Harvey was one of four soldier brothers and was a native of Shireoaks, the family being well known and highly respected in the district. He was awarded the Military Medal last year, in recognition of his gallant conduct. He was recently nominated for a commission, and his appointment was expected at any time. He had spent three years service in France, where he had discharged his duty loyally and uncompanionably. The news that he has passed over will be heard by many friends with regret, and their sympathy will be with his parents, in the son of so gallant a man. Two brothers are still serving, and one has been discharges.
