Family History

George Arthur Anderson was born in 1891 in Shireoaks, Nottinghamshire, the only son of Thomas and Hannah Anderson. He had 4 sisters, Edith, Lily, Ada, and Doris all born in Shireoaks. By the time George had reached the age of 19, he was working as a blacksmiths striker in the local colliery, residing with his family at St Lukes Terrace, Shireoaks. George Arthur Anderson Worksop Guardian 22 Sept 1922 We regret to record the death, which took place on Saturday, of Mr George Arthur Anderson, of Shireoaks at the early age of 30 years. The deceased was the son of Mr and Mrs T Anderson, Shireoaks and was a well known figure in the village (where he had resided all his life) and the district around. The circumstances of his death were particularly sad as inasmuch after serving in the rank in the war, without serious bodily wounds, the effects of the war experiences asserted themselves with such severity as to finally prove fatal. Mr Anderson joined the 1/8th Sherwood Foresters in September 1914, and took part in many great and minor actions on the Western front. Later he had experience with the Transport Section and also other departments. He returned to his employment as an engine winder at Shireoaks Colliery and two years ago this month he was married, his bride being Miss H Getliff, daughter of Mr W H Getliff, the Shireoaks Schoolmaster. The deceased was a sidesman at St Luke’s Church and had been a chorister since boyhood. He was a member of Shireoaks cricket club and had played in the league elevens and was identified with the village in other ways. About six months ago his health became so impaired that he was ordered to Sheffield Royal Infirmary and here, despite all that could be done for him he passed away as stated. To his young widow and all his relatives sincere sympathy is extended in their sever loss. The remains of the deceased were laid to rest in Shireoaks Cemetery, the interment being preceded by a service in St Luke’s church where practically every seat was occupied.

Military History

On the 16 Nov 1914 George Anderson went to Worksop where he was attested, took the oath, and was embodied in the 8th Bn Notts and Derby. On the 28 June 1915 he was transferred to the 1/8th Sherwood Foresters and was drafted to France. His soldier’s record does not indicate his movements during these war years but he returned back, to home soil, via Boulogne, in Dec 1918 where he was granted leave. He was placed on the reserve on the 28 Jan 1919 and discharged on the 31st March 1920.
