Family History

James was born in 1881 the son of James a turner and engine maker and Harriet Green of 116 Church Street, Gainsborough. He had two brothers George William and Walter and a sister Alice. By 1891 the family were living at 7 Ebenezer Place, Morton, Gainsborough. In the 1901 census he was living at Clayworth. By 1911 James was living at Leys Lane, Gringley on the Hill with his wife Lucy to whom he had been married for 2 years.

Military History

James enlisted in Retford and first entered a theatre of war in France on 2nd March 1915. He was wounded and eventually died of these wounds after being transferred to a hospital in Birmingham on 19th October 1917. He was buried in Gainsborough General Cemetery, Grave Reference: A Con 2852. The CWGC record and headstone gives his age as 37.
