Family History

In 1911 Mary Wood, nee Brothwell, wife of William Wood, recorded that she had had eleven children. They were all born between 1871 and 1894. William Wood had been a farm labourer but from 1891 he was working as a farm foreman. The couple had married in 1871 registered in Retford and had moved around the Retford area, finally settling down at Darlton around 1886. Walter Wood, the subject of this text was their eighth child born in 1890 at Darlton. In 1911, he was working in Darlton as a farm labourer and, between then and the war, moved on to Sheffield.

Military History

Walter enlisted from Sheffield and went to France on the 20th December 1915. He survived nearly three years before he was killed in action and buried in La Baraque British Cemetery, France A.15
