Family History

John Whitehead was born in 1889 the son of Thomas a lace maker and Rebecca Whitehead née Oldershaw of 20 Alexandra Street, Stapleford and the brother of Ann, Emma, William, Elizabeth, Ada, Alice and Arthur Whitehead. Thomas was born in 1854 at Bramcote, Rebecca Oldershaw was born in 1854 at Stapleford, married in 1874 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district. In 1911 they lived at 20 Alexandra Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire Thomas is a lace maker as is his son John. John married Ada Allen (born 12th January 1894) in 1916, their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they lived at 15 Co operative Street, Long Eaton. Commencing 2nd June 1919 Ada Whitehead was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. His widow re married in 1919 at Stapleford to Charles Gilbert.

Military History

Private John Whitehead enlisted on 22nd February 1916 at Long Eaton giving his age as 27 yrs and 10 months, he was a lace maker and his next of kin was his mother Rebecca he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 31st October 1916 at Derby posted to the Durham Light Infantry on 6th April 1917 he landed in France on 14th June 1917. He was killed in action whilst serving in Italy on 27th October 1918 and is buried in Tezze British Cemetery Italy plot 5 row A Grave 10
