Thomas Tunaley

Thomas was the son of Thomas and Annie Tunaley. His father, Thomas, was born in Derby and his mother, Annie, in Nottingham. they were married in 1887 (A/M/J Nottingham) and by the time of the 1911 Census, when they had been married for 23 years, they had had 12 children of who only eight survived. Seven children were named on the census between 1891 and 1911: Gertrude b. 31 August 1887 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Thomas birth registered 1896 (J/F/M Nottingham) both of whom were born in Nottingham, and Robert Francis probably b.abt. 1898 (J/F/M Shardlow), Florence b. 1899 (J/A/S Shardlow), Louisa birth registered 1902 (J/F/M Shardlow), Elizabeth b. 1905 (A/M/J Sharldow) and Beatrice May b. 7 March 1910 (A/M/J Shardlow), all of whom were born in either Sandiacre or Stapleford. In 1891Thomas (21), a fitter, and Annie (20), a lace hand, were living in the parish of St Mary, Nottingham, with their daughter Gertrude (3). By 1901 Thomas and Annie were living at 4 Gas Street, Stapleford with their four children, Gertrude (14) a lace mender, Thomas (5), Robert (3) and Florence (1). The family was still living at the same address in 1911. Five of Thomas and Annie's children were in their parent's home on the night of the census: Thomas (15) a threader, Robert (13) who worked in a factory, Florence (11), Louisa (9) and Beatrice May (1). The eldest daughter, Gertrude, had married Francis Beecham (23) a railway plate layer, in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on 7 January 1911. At the time of the census the same year, Francis (23), head of household, and Gertrude (24) were living at 42 Town Street, Sandiacre. Also in the home on the night of the census was Elizabeth Tunaley (5) described as Francis' sister ie Gertrude's younger sister. Thomas' father probably died in 1920 (Sep Nottingham) age 50. Of Thomas' siblings: Gertrude's husband, Francis Beecham, also served in the Great War, probably from 1914, and a pension record shows that at that time they had two daughters, Gertrude Annie and Irene. In 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register Francis and Gertrude were living in Derbyshire, with two of their children, Francis b. 9 December 1918 who worked for a silk manufacturer, and Queenie b. 2 February 1924 an upholstery spring maker. Gertrude probably died on 12 August 1976 (Sep Nottingham) aged 89. Robert Francis may have married Sybil E Warburton in 1928 (A/M/J Nottingham). However, there is a record of a Robert Tunaley b. 28 December 1898(sic), divorced, a general labourer, a patient in the Public Assistance Institution at Shardlow. There is a record of the death of a Robert Francis Tunaley in 1946 (Dec Shardlow) aged 47. Florence has not yet been traced after 1911. Louisa may have married Thomas A Mottershead in 1921 (J/F/M Shardlow). A child, Louisa Mottershead, parents Thomas and Louisa of South Normanton, was baptised on 21 January 1915 in South Normanton. Elizabeth may have married Frederick H Pegg in 1927 (J/F/M Shardlow). Beatrice May married Frederick J Buckley in 1930 (O/N/D Sharldow). In 1939 Frederick b. 5 August 1907, an acetate silk finishing hand, and Beatrice, a wire weaver, were living in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Beatrice died on 22 June 1980 (Jun Nottingham).
