Family History

William Ernest Smith was born in 1882 He married Kate Lilliam Howarth (born 15th July 1886) on 24th December 1906 at St Lawrence Church Long Eaton, they lived at 9 Harriett Road, Stapleford and had 2 sons George William born 26th June 1908 and Leslie Ernest born 7th April 1912. In 1911 the family lived at New Cottages, Harriett Street, Stapleford, William 29 yrs is an iron pipe moulder in a blast furnace, living with his wife Kate 23 yrs and son George William 2 yrs of age. Commencing 4th February 1918 his widow Kate Smith was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military History

Rifleman William Ernest Smith enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Stapleford, he was killed in action on 10th July 1917 and is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial Belgium.
