James Alec Shaw known as 'Alec' was born in 1898 the son of John a coal miner hewer and the late Urenah Shaw née Lilley of 22 William Street, Stapleford. John Shaw was born in 1863 at Stapleford, Urenah Lilley was born in 1866 at Netherton, Worcestershire, married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they went on to have 15 children, sadly two however died in infancy or early childhood, In 1911 the family are living at 22 William Road, Stapleford, John is a coal miner hewer Alec is a foundry labourer.

Military History

Private James Alec Shaw enlisted at Ilkeston, he was killed in action on 8th November 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
