Family History

Walter John Rhodes was born in 1888 the son of John a general labourer and the late Gertrude Lavinia Rhodes née Bailey of 16 Midland Terrace, Stapleford and the brother of Eva, Albert, Gertrude and James Rhodes. John was born in 1862 in Norfolk Gertrude Bailey was born in 1871 she died in 1907 aged 36 yrs. In 1901 they lived at 3 Raeburn Street West Hartlepool later moving to 62 Alexandra Street, Stapleford Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Private Walter John Rhodes enlisted on 5th August 1908 at Nottingham, giving his age as 20 yrs and 9 months and his occupation as a general labourer. He served in India from 1909 to 1914 and landed in France on 4th November 1914. He was killed in action on 13th March 1915 and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 26 and 27.
