George Thomas Phipps

George Thomas was the eldest son of Tom (Thomas) and Mary Ann Phipps nee Dilks. Tom Phipps was born in Sutton Bonington, Nottinghamshire, in about 1860. Mary Ann was the daughter of William and Sabrina Dilks, born in Sandiacre, Derbyshire, birth registered J/F/M Shardlow, and she was baptised in Sandiacre on 24 April 1869. Tom and Mary were married in Sandiacre parish church on 4 February 1889. According to the 1911 Census when they had been married for 22 years they had had nine children of whom eight survived. Eight children were recorded on the census of 1901 and 1911: George Thomas b. Sandiacre 6 August 1891 (J/A/S Shardlow), Rose Hilda b. Sandiacre 1893 (J/A/S Shardlow), Lily Edith [Edith] b. Stapleford 1898 (A/M/J Shardlow), Charles Robert Bramwell [Bramwell] b. Stapleford 1900 (A/M/J Shardlow), Harriet Sabrina [Sabrina] b. Stapleford 1902 (A/M/J Shardlow), James Albert [Albert] b. Stapleford birth registered 1905 (J/F/M Shardlow), Herbert Walter [Walter] b. Stapleford 9 May 1907 (A/M/J Shardlow) and Stanley Alexander b. Stapleford 1909 (J/A/S Shardlow). In 1891 when first married Tom (30), an iron furnace labourer, and Mary (22) were living on Larch Lane, Sandiacre. By 1901 they were living on Alexandra Street, Stapleford. Tom was now working as an ironwork platelayer. He and Mary had four children: George (9), Rose (7), Lily (3) and Bramwell (11 months). Also in the household was a male boarder. At the time of the 1911 Census the family was living at 19 Middle Orchard Street, Stapleford. All eight children were at home on the night of the census: George (19) a stationary engine man at Stanton Pipes, Rose (17) and Lily (13) who were both lace workers, Bramwell (10), Sabrina (8), Albert (6), Walter (4) and Stanley (2). When the RN notified Tom Phipps of his son's death in 1915 his address was 29 Church Street, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. Tom Phipps died in 1920 (J/A/S Shardlow) aged 60. His widow Mary Ann died at the age of 87 on 28 December 1956 (O/N/D East Retford). Of William's siblings little information has been found apart from: Charles Robert Bramwell married Elizabeth E Lightford in 1921 (A/M/J Shardlow). He died on 4 June 1986; he was then living at 75 Wadsworth Road, Stapleford. Harriet Sabrina married William G Ostler in 1931 (J/F/M Shardlow) and died in 1938 (J/F/M Basford) aged 35. Herbert Walter married Beatrice M Jeffcoat (b. 19 April 1910) in 1934 (J/A/S Shardlow) and in 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register they were living in Long Eaton. Walter was an iron foundry labourer and Beatrice a silk slip winder.
