John Charles Mitchell was born in 1889 the son of John a locomotive engine driver and the late and Elizabeth Mitchell née Neal and the brother of Harold Mitchell of 14 Park Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. John Mitchell was born in 1858 at Mansfield, Elizabeth Neal was born in 1861 at Ilkeston, she died in 1907 aged 46 yrs, married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, His father remarried in 1900 to Ann Maria b1866 at Derby. In 1911 the family lived at 14 Park Street, Stapleford, John is locomotive engine driver, living with his second wife An Maria and his sons John Charles a clerk and Harold an apprentice engine fitter. He lived at 14 Clarence Road Wood Green London by the time he enlisted.
Rifleman John Charles Mitchell attested under Lord Derby's Scheme on 8th December 1915 at Harringay standing 5' 10" and weighing 133 lbs giving his age as 27 yrs and 127 days his next of kin was his father John of 14 Park Street, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. He was mobilised on 8th July 1916 and landed in France 11th November 1916 posted 26th November 1916 to Rifle Brigade. He was taken ill on 21th January 1917 and admitted to the 2nd Australian hospital from where he was returned to England 5th February 1917 with a gastric ulcer and died of septic peritonitis and influenza at the Huddersfield War Hospital on 9th August 1917. He is buried at Stapleford Cemetery.
Personal effects returned to Mitchell's family were: 1 pair of gloves, 1 collar & tie, 1 handkerchief, 2 pipes, 1 razor, 1 pair of scissors in a case, 1 cap badge, 2 numerals, 1 mirror, 1 note book, 1 cigarette case, 1 tin box,1 small knife, 1 wallet, letters, cards and photos.
