Elijah Henshaw was born in 1892 the son of Walter a general labourer and Annie Henshaw née Tagg of 57 Lott Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. Walter was born in 1853 at Cotmanhay Annie Tagg was born in 1858 at Portsmouth married in 1885 at Nottingham and went on to have 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were ; Robert b1885 Nottingham, James b1887 Radford, Clara b1889 Kimberley, Elijah b1892 Bulwell, Samuel b1895 Stapleford. In 1911 the family are living at 57 Lot Street, Stapleford and are shown as Walter Henshaw a general labourer, they are living with their children, Clara a French polisher, Elijah a coal miner working at Cossall Colliery , Samuel a coal miner at Cossall colliery, also at the address is Arthur Reece 6 yrs a scholar, described as adopted son.
Private Elijah Henshaw enlisted at Nottingham, It was during his initial training that he caught a chill and was sent to the Military Hospital at Tring. The chill developed into consumption and he died of tuberculosis on 27th April 1915, he was only 23 yrs of age. His parents were at his bedside during his last few days. They brought his body back to Stapleford and he was buried at Stapleford Cemetery.
