Ernest Hardy was born in 1895 the son of Samuel a coal miner and Sarah Ann Hardy née Shawcroft of 1 Bostocks Road, Pinfold Lane, Stapleford. Samuel was born in 1854 at Whiteborough, Teversall, Sarah Ann Shawcroft was born in 1857 at Somercoates, married in 1874 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they had 14 children, 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 they lived at 1 Bostocks Road, Pinfold Lane Stapleford Nottinghamshire, Samuel is a coal miner living with his wife Sarah Ann and their children, Ernest 16 yrs an iron pipe moulders labourer, Percy 14 yrs an errand boy and Lois 11 yrs a scholar. Ernest married May Bull (born 15th May 1892) in 1916 at Birkhampstead, they lived at 50 Brook Street, Tring. Commencing 28th May 1917 his widow May was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
Acting Sergeant Ernest Hardy enlisted at Nottingham, he landed in France on 9th September 1915 and was killed in action on 19th November 1916, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
His brother Joseph joined the Royal Navy on 27 June 1908 on a 12 year Short Service Engagement (5 years + 7 years Royal Fleet Reserve). He served in the following ships and shore establishments: HMS Acheron, 27 June 1908-19 January 1909 (Stoker 2nd Class), HMS Charybdis, 20 January 19090-26 August 1909 (Stoker 1st Class, 1 April 1909); HMS Irresistible, 27 August 1909-1 June 1910; Pembroke II, 2 June 1910-1 August 1910; HMS Royal Arthur, 2 August 1910-6 October 1910; HMS Cadmus, 7 October 1910-17 October 1912; HMS Talbot, 18 October 1912-13 December 1912; Pembroke II, 14 December 1912-28 June 1913. He was Discharged Shore (SS Expired) and transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve (Chatham B. 9819) on 29 June 1913. He was mobilised on 2 August 1914 and served in: HMS Surley, 2 August 1914-16 June 1915 (Stoker 1st Class); HMS Theseus, 17 June 1915-12 January 1916; Pembroke II, 13 January 1916-22 March 1916. Joseph was invalided to Plymouth Hospital although he was at home when he died on 16 May 1916. He was buried in Stapleford Cemetery (grave ref. C737).
