William Hallam was born in 1898 the son of John Henry a lace twist hand and Mary Hallam née Shelton of 45 Cobden Street Long Eaton. John Henry was born in 1870 at Stapleford, Mary Shelton was born in 1871 at Trent Junction, married in 1891 recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they had the following children, Nellie b1893 Long Eaton, Frederick b1895 Sandiacre, William b1898 Long Eaton and Elsie b1902 Long Eaton. In 1911 the family are living at 45 Cobden Street, Long Eaton John Henry a lace twist hand, living with wife Mary Jane and children, Nellie a slip winder, Frederick a lace threader, William a jacker off and Elsie a scholar.
Private William Hallam was called up on 17th November 1916 at Derby giving his age as 19 yrs his occupation was a lace threader, he landed in France on 7th June 1917 and was killed in action on 26th September 1917. His name is commemorated on the Tne Cot Memorial.
