Harold Coomber was born in 1892 and was the youngest son of Thomas Richard a dairyman and Amelia Ruth Coomber née Plater of Hawthorne Cottage Stapleford Nottinghamshire. Thomas Richard was born in 1853 in Hayward Heath, Sussex Amelia Ruth Plater was born in 1853 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, married in 1874 in Silkstone, Yorkshire and had the following children, Annie Mary b1875 South Witham, Lincolnshire, Fred William b1877 Oakham, Leicestershire, Emily b1879 Oakham, Thomas Richard b1882 Shardlow, Derbyshire, Walter b1884 Shardlow, Amelia b 1885 Stapleford, Fred William b1887 Basford, Jethro b1888 Sandiacre and Harold b1892 Ilkeston. In 1911 his parents are living at 85 Derby Road, Stapleford and are shown as Thomas Richard 58 yrs a dairyman, he is living with his wife Amelia Ruth 58 yrs Also in 1911 we find Harold boarding in Long Eaton with his brother in law Lewis Elliott and his married sister Annie Elliott at 66 Curzon Street, Long Eaton. he is shown as being 18 yrs and a butcher.
Gunner Harold Coomber, enlisted at Nottingham on 26th August 1914 and served with 'L' Battery Royal Horse Artillery. His medal index card states his first theatre of war was the Balkans where he landed on 27th April 1915. He died on 15th September 1915 at Gallipoli and is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery.
