Herbert Edmund Carlin was born in 1899 the son of the late Stephen Carlin a engine fitter in iron works and Fanny Carlin née Purdy. Stephen was born in 1864 at Hilltop, Eastwood, he died in 1907 aged 42 yrs, Fanny Purdy was born in 1871 married on 27th June 1896 at Babbington Chapel, Basford, they went on to have the following children, Jennie b1896, Stephen b1897, Herbert b1899, William b1900 ,Annie b1903 and Albert b1904 all were born in Langley Mill In 1911 Herbert and his mother and siblings are living with Fanny's second husband James Taylor and family at 12 Edward Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire and are shown as James Taylor 31 yrs a blast furness man, he is living with Fanny Taylor 35 yrs and children, Nellie Taylor 5 yrs Walter Taylor 3 yrs, Doris Taylor 1 year old, Stephen Carlin 14 yrs a pony driver coal miner, Herbert 12 years scholar, Annie 8 yrs and Willie Carlin 10 yrs of age a scholar. James Taylor had stated on the census that he has been married for 6 yrs (however BDM index show the marriage occurred in 1914 see below) His mother went on to re marry in 1914 to James Taylor their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district,
Private Herbert Edmund Carlin enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Stapleford, landing in France on 1st June 1915 he died accidentally on 10th May 1916 and is buried at Suzanne Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
His brother Private CH/19583 Stephen Carlin served with the Royal Marines Light Infantry, Royal Naval Division he embarked on 25th September 1915 and was missing later reported killed in action on 13th November 1916. He is buried in Y Ravine Cemetery , Beaumont Hamel Both brothers are also commemorated on St Lawrence Church war memorial Heanor.
