Family History

Alfred Bush was born in 1878 the son of John a farm labourer and Zillah Bush née Jarvis, of Elder Street, Wimbish. John was born in 1833, Zillah Jarvis was born in 1836 both were born at Wimbush married on 11th April 1857 at Wimbush and went on to have 9 children, 3 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Alfred married Sarah Ellen Wilson (born 5th May 1876) on 28th December 1895 at the parish church at Reston, Derbyshire, they lived at 28 Antill Street, Stapleford and went on to have the following children, Ada b1897 Ilkeston, Charles John b1899 Wimbush, George Henry b1901 Hallams Field, Lillian b1903 Woodborough, Alfred James b1905 Arnold, William Thomas b1907, Violet Ellen b1909 Stapleford, Ernest b1912 Stapleford, Ivy b1915 Stapleford and Minnie b1917 Stapleford. In 1911 the family are living at Moorbridge Lane, Stapleford and are shown as Alfred a labourer at Stanton Iron Works, Sarah Ellen and their children, Ada working at home, Charles John a scholar, George Henry a scholar, Lillian 8 yrs, Alfred James 5 yrs, William Thomas 3 yrs and Violet Ellen 1 year of age. Commencing 16th April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 38 shillings and 9 pence a week

Military History

Sergeant Alfred Bush enlisted on 13th May 1915 at Nottingham giving his age as 37 yrs and 9 months, he was a town labourer. He was appointed Lance Corporal, 18th February 1916 and went to France on 16th March 1916. Promoted to Corporal on 1st November 1916 and awarded the Military Medal London Gazette on 19th February 1917: “For gallantry in action on 13th November 1916 in the attack on St Pierre Divion” Appointed Lance Sergeant on 23rd March 1917 and to Sergeant on 5th May 1917 he was killed in action, 20th September 1917 during the attack on the German line at Shrewsbury Forest near Zwarteleen (Hill 60), Belgium. Commemorated : Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A.
