Herbert Burrows was born in 1886 he was the grandson of Charlotte Greasley with whom he lived in 1911 at 27 Lot Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. He married Ethel Mary Etherington Ash (born 25th February 1889) in 1916 at Nottingham, they lived at 36 George Road, West Bridgford. Commencing 18th June 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week
Private Herbert Burrows enlisted at Beeston, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He served from early 1916 and probably joined the 9th battalion in July 1916 when they returned from Egypt. His family received his British War Medal and Victory Medal. On 24th 200 offices and men moved out on a working party at 2pm. They were tasked to dig a new trench forward of the British 1st line, and situated north of Beaumont Hamel (Somme). He was amongst one officer and eight other ranks killed by German shellfire. One officer and eighteen other ranks were also wounded. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, so was probably one of the men killed immediately. John Morse
