John Brown was born in 1889 the son of the late William a green grocer and Mary Ann Brown née Harrison of 3 Bridge Street, Sandiacre William was born in 1849 in Bramcote and his mother Mary Ann Harrison was born in 1849 at Mapperley, Derbyshire, they were married in 1870 recorded in the Shardlow registration district. They went on to have 14 children, two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, there children were born at Bramcote and Sandiacre William b1872 George b1875, Eliza b1877, Harry b1878 Herbert b1879 Walter b1882, Arthur b1883 Ernest b1886 Clara b1887, John b1889, Sarah b1890 e and Lucy b1892 William died in 1901 aged 51 yrs the death was recorded in the Shardlow registration district. In 1911 the family are living at 3 Bridge Street, Sandiacre Mary Ann 62 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Herbert 31 yrs a foundry labourer, Walter 29 yrs a foundry labourer, Ernest 24 yrs a platelayer John 21 yrs a platelayer and Lucy 19 yrs a brass bobbin winder.
Corporal John Brown, enlisted on 18th February 1916 at Ilkeston he gave his age as 27 yrs and 1 month his occupation was that of a ganger on the midland railway He was posted to the reserves the next day and on 4th April 1916 he was mobilised for war, he served with the Railway Operating Division, Royal Engineers, and on 5th September 1916 he embarked from Devonport , disembarking on 16th September 1916 at Alexandria. He was posted to the 53rd Railway Company on 18th September 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 21st April 1918 and he died of Malaria on 18th July 1918 in Alexandria, Egypt . He is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.
