Harold Joseph Briggs was born in 1895 he was the son of William an auctioneer and Eliza Briggs née Easom, 15 Victoria Road, Stapleford, Nottingham. William and Eliza Easom were born in 1862 in Ilkeston, they were married in 1884 which was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have following children all born in Stapleford, Florence b1887, William David b1890 and Harold Joseph b1895. His mother died before the 1911 census. His father went on to remarry Elizabeth Winrow in 1912, their marriage is recorded in the Basford Registration area. In 1911 the family are living at 15 Victoria Street Stapleford, William 49 yrs a widow , an auctioneer, he is living with his children Florence 24 yrs a school teacher and Harold Joseph 16 yrs a pupil auctioneer , also living with the family is a domestic servant Maggie Derbyshire 19 yrs. His probate (with will) was proved in London on 25th May 1917 and shows him as Harold Joseph Briggs of Victoria Street, Stapleford, Nottingham , acting sergeant 13th battalion Rifle Brigade died 10th July 1916 in France on active service , his effects of £202 were left to his father William Briggs auctioneer .
Lance Sergeant Harold Joseph Briggs enlisted on 5th June 1915 in Ilkeston, he was 20 yrs and 7 months old and was an auctioneers clerk he arrived at Winchester camp on 7th June 1915. Promoted to Corporal on 15th September 1916 he landed in France on 12th December 1915 and joined his battalion on 7th January 1916. He was promoted to acting Sergeant on 11th June 1916. He was killed in action on 10th July 1916 and has no known grave, commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
His brother David Briggs also served during the Great War as Coproral in the Australian Infantry, he was killed in action on 25th April 1918 and is buried in Hangard Communal Cemetery Extension. Obituary published 18th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BRIGGS. – Killed in action, April 25th, 1918, Corpl. David Briggs, Australian Infantry, aged 27, son of William Briggs, auctioneer, Stapleford, Notts. Also in loving memory of Harold J. Briggs, only brother of the above, killed in action 1916.
