Joseph William Bowmer was the son of Samuel a hairdresser and Sarah Bowmer née Gough of 41 Nottingham Road, Stapleford, Samuel was born in 1859 at Somercotes, Sarah Sabrina was born in 1865 at Sandiacre, married on 4th March 1886 at Sandiacre and went on to have the following children, Clarissa Mabel b1887,Joseph William b1892 and Lewis Wildsmith b1900 all were born in Sandiacre, In 1901 they lived at 92 Station Road Sandiacre Derbyshire. In 1911 the family were living at 41 Nottingham Road, Stapleford Samuel Bowmer 52 yrs a hairdresser, Sarah Sabina 46 yrs and their children, Clarissa Mabel 24 yrs a lace mender, Joseph William 20 yrs a hairdresser and Lewis Wildsmith 11 yrs a scholar.
Private Joseph William Bowmer enlisted on 9th October 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 193 days, he was a hair dresser, he was posted to the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He was seriously wounded on 20th November 1917 whilst serving on the Cambria front he received a gun shot wound to his back, he was treated and returned to England where he was admitted on 16th December 1917 to St Marys Military Hospital, Whalley, Lancashire. His wound had severed his spinal cord and left him a paraplegic an unsuccessful attempt to remove the bullet was made on 7th January 1918. On 9th April 1918 he was transferred to the Bagthorpe Hospital at Nottingham. Following a medical board hearing he was discharged from the Army on 31st July 1918 and died on 14th February 1919.
