Family History

Joseph Bardill was born in 1880 the son of John a gardening labourer and Mary Ann Bardill, née Sallis. John was born in 1847 at Stapleford, Mary Ann Sallis in 1846 at Sandiacre. They were married on 24th May 1868 at Sandiacre and went on to have 13 children. Their first, Samuel (1869), was born at Sandiacre, the remaining 12 were all born in Stapleford and were, Fred b1871, Anne b1872, Neville b1873, John E b1875, Arthur b1877, William b1878, Joseph b1880, Alfred b1882, Francis b1884, Florence b1885, James b1886 and Nellie b1889. On the 1911 census the family was living at 150, Derby Road, Stapleford.

Military History

Joseph Bardill enlisted on 27th April 1916 at Nottingham giving his age as 36 years and 4 months. He was posted as a gunner into the Royal Garrison Artillery on 29th April 1916 and joined them at their barracks at Great Yarmouth on 5th May 1916. On 6th June 1916 he was posted to the 160 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. He embarked from Southampton on 18th September 1916 arriving at Le Harve the following day. He died of his wounds on 6th August 1917 at 5th London Field Ambulance, France and is buried at at Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium

Extra Information

Joseph's brother Jack was serving with the Grenadier Guards during the Boer War when he was killed 29/5/1901. Three of Joseph Bardill’s brothers also served during the Great War. Frank served in Royal Garrison Artillery in France, William served as a sapper in the Royal Engineers and Arthur who was still in training when Joseph died. All three survived the war.
