Family History

Joseph Arthur Barber was born in 1892 and was the son of Arthur a blast furnace man and the late Eliza Barber née Ankers of 40 Andrew Ave, Larklands, Ilkeston. Arthur was born in 1862 at Marsham, Derbyshire, Eliza Ankers was in 1865 at Stanton by Dale, Derbyshire. She died in 1910 aged 45. Married in 1884 in the Shardlow Registration District, they had the following children, Sarah Ann b1884, Olive Eliza b1885, both born at Stanton by Dale, James Thomas b1888, Mary Jane b1890, Joseph Arthur b1892 and John Henry b1894, all born at Ilkeston. In 1911, Joseph Arthur Barber was boarding with his married sister Olive Eliza Smith and family at 21, Bessel Lane, Stapleford. His 27 year old brother in law Willie Smith was a general labourer. Joseph Arthur married Ethel May Dunn (born 15th January 1894 ) in 1914 in the Shardlow Registration District. They lived at 25, Brookhill Street, Stapleford and went on to have 2 children, Kathleen May born January 1915 and John Arthur July 1916.

Military History

Joseph Arthur Barber was killed in action on 14th September 1916. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
