Francis Arthur Wombwell was born in 1893 at Caunton and was the son of Annie Maria Brummitt and the brother of Edith Beatrice Wombwell b1884, May Wombwell b1887, Harold Wombwell b1889 Ellen Wombwell b1897, and Bertha Wombwell b1899, all were born in Caunton. In the 1911 census Francis Arthur has left the family home, he is living at Muskham Woodhouse near Newark, he is living with John Cephas Clarke 74 yrs a farmer and his wife Eveline 71 yrs, he is shown as being 17 yrs old single and a farm labourer

Military History

Francis Arthur Wombwell served as Lance Corporal Arthur Wombwell he enlisted at Newark and served with the 20th Hussars, he died of wounds on 3rd April 1918. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. Caunton Roll of Honour: “Francis Arthur Wombwell, 20th Hussars (Lance Corporal). Died of wounds received in action in France on April 3rd, 1918.”
