Ernest Annable was the son of Thomas a railway engineer and later night watchman and the late Fanny Castle Annable née Smedley of 49 Moorbridge Lane Stapleford. Thomas was born in 1866 at Morley and died in 1915 aged 49. Fanny Castle Smedley was born in 1867 at Stapleford and died in 1918 aged 51. Married 26/12/1887, they had 12 children they were married on 26th December 1887 at Stapleford, they went on to have 12 children, all born at Stapleford. Amongst the 10 surviving infancy were George b1889, Elizabeth b1893, Alice b1894, Ernest b1895, Thomas b1898, Edith 1902, Agnes b1904, Elsie b1908 and Fred Annable b1910. all were born in Stapleford. In 1911, the family lived on Lime Grove, Stapleford. George was a labourer, Elizabeth no occupation, Alice a lace drawer, Ernest an apprentice fitter, Thomas Edith, Agnes were at school and Fred was 1 year old.
Ernest Annable enlisted in September 1914 at Doncaster. He landed in France on 26th August 1915 and he died of multiple gun shot wounds on 25th January 1916 at the 7th Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried at Merville Community Cemetery, France.
"Lance Corp. Ernest Annable. Ilkeston Pioneer, 25 February 1916. Stapleford has to mourn the loss of another of her brave sons, whose names will henceforth be inscribed on an imperishable roll of honour. Lance-Corpl, Ernest Annable, of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, was 21 years of age and was the son of Mrs Annable, of Moorbridge Lane, Stapleford. Official intimation has been received that he was wounded and died on Jan.25th, in France. He enlisted in September, 1914, and was at that time working at Doncaster. He was previously employed at Stanton Iron Works, and was well known in the locality."
