Family History

Henry Palmby was born in 1900 in Wicken, Cambridgeshire and was the son of George William a waggoner on a farm and Hannah Maria Palmby née Person of 'Rudsey' Bleasby. His father George William was born in 1881 at Wicken and his mother Hannah Maria Pearson was born in 1884 at Wicken, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Ely registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Wicken were Henry b1900, Amelia b1903, Daisy b1907 and Maud b1909. In 1901 Henry lived with his parents George and Hannah Palmby together with his elder sister Elsie in Wicken Cambridgeshire. George was a farm labourer. By 1911 the family had moved to Rudsey Cottage Goverton Bleasby. Elsie had died but Henry now had three younger sisters, Amelia, Daisy and Maud

Military History

Private Henry Palmby was conscripted and enlisted in Mansfield on 17th July 1917 where he was placed into the 86th Battalion training reserve. He joined at the Derby depot on 20th September 1917 aged 18 years 2 months he was a millers labourer and his next of kin was his father George of Bleasby. On 5th December 1917 he was transferred into the Durham Light Infantry and on 3rd April 1918 embarked from Folkstone for the Western Front. He was killed in action on 27th May 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
