He was the son of Henry and Mary Shepherd (née Hemsley) who were married on 13th June 1859 at Epperstone Parish Church. He was the brother of Elizabeth, William, John, Mary and Ada Shepherd. In 1881 they lived at Epperstone. In 1901 Mary lived at Chapel Street Epperstone a widow, aged 63, and in receipt of relief. In 1911 Thomas lodged with Mordin Hoyte at Weir Mills Farm Linby Nottinghamshire.
He previously served as 20358 and 8512. He first entered theatre (France) 14/7/1915. CWGC and UKSWD incorrectly cite 19/6/1917 as date of death. The battalion was at rest on this date. The Soldiers' Effects Register cites 19/7/1917 a day on which, according to the unit war diary at 'about 2.30 am the enemy barraged our line very heavily for about one and a half hours in connection with a raid on the left battalion. The trenches gave very little cover and casualties were large - 2/Lt Bridger and 12 OR killed and 70 OR wounded.' David Nunn
Thomas's estate was claimed by his brother William in 1920. Arras Memorial Bay 3 and 4 Different spellings exist of Tom's Christian and surnames: Shepperd on the war memorial, Shepherd on his parents’ wedding record (which they signed with an X), Tom Harry Shephard on Tom's birth certificate. CWGC and UKSWD cite Thomas Henry Shepard. He has two Medal Roll Cards under the surnames Shepherd and Shephard. The Soldiers' Effects Register lists him as Shephard.
