Jack Leslie Failes James was born in 1894 at Wakefield and was the son of William Samuel a lace manufacturer and Elizabeth Failes James née Fisher of The Old Cottage, Bleasby His father William Samuel was born in 1870 at Bilston, Staffordshire, his mother Elizabeth Failes Fisher was born in 1870 at Grimston, Norfolk, they were married on 10th February 1893 at Grimston and went on to have the following children, Jack Leslie Failes b1894 Wakefield, Winifred Evelyn b1895 Wakefield, Harry b1899 Wakefield and Marjory Alice b1908 West Bridgford. By 1911 the family had moved to Bleasby and were shown on the census as William Samuel 41 yrs a lace manufacturer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 41 yrs and their children, Winifred 16 yrs no occupation listed Harry 12 yrs a scholar and Marjory 3 years of age. In the 1911 census we find that Jack has left home and is in the Army, he is shown as being 17 yrs of age , a soldier in the Lincolnshire Regiment at barracks in Lincoln.

Military History

Corporal Jack Leslie Failes James enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards. His medal record shows that he was deployed to Flanders on 13th August, 1914 as part of the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in September, 1914 fighting in the rear-guard action supporting the retreat from Mons. He is buried at Guards Grave, Villers Cotterets Forest, Aisne, France.
