Family History

Thomas Alfred Girlin Hunt was born in 1886 the son of Joseph a labourer in a chemical works and Harriett Hunt née Welbourne and the brother of Harriet Jane, Joseph, Lilly May and Violet Norah Hunt. In 1911 they lived at Gate Inn Cottages Awsworth Nottinghamshire. Joseph was born in 1857 at Ironville, Harriett Welbourne was born in 1858 at Plungar, married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district.

Military History

Private Thomas A G Hunt enlisted on 12th May 1915 at Ilkeston giving his age as 29 yrs and 6 months, he was a collier, he went to France with 16th battalion on 16 March 1916. On 3 September 1916 Thomas was wounded - gun shot wound to left leg. and returned to UK on the HS Stad Antwerpen, arriving on 18 September 1916. After recovery he was sent to 9th Battalion and joined them on 16 June 1917. On 4 October 1917 the battalion was in the fore of an attack towards Poelcappelle, Belgium. The attack was successful with many gallantry medals being awarded including a VC. Thomas was killed in the mud of Flanders and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
