Family History

Hugh Richard Davies was born in 1891 at Awsworth and was the son of William Hugh a house painter and Sarah Davies née Clifton of The Lane, Awsworth His father William was born in 1855 in the United States of America, he died 24 November 1915 aged 61 yrs and his mother Sarah Clifton was born in 1857 in Greasley she died Sarah on 29 December 1915 aged 58 yrs, they were married in 1883, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 4 children all of whom were born in Awsworth and were Harriett Hannah b1885, Ethel b1887, Laura b1889 and Hugh Richard b1891. In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Street, Awsworth and are shown as William Hugh 56 yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Sarah 54 yrs and their children Harriett Hannah 26 yrs a dress maker, Ethel 24 yrs a dress maker, Laura 22 yrs a milliner and Hugh Richard 20 yrs a grocers assistant. Hugh Richards probate was proven on 3rd July 1917 at Nottingham and shows him as Hugh Richard Davies of the Lane, Awsworth, Private in H.M.Army, died 18th September 1916 at the Military Hospital, Weymouth, his effects of £112 4 shillings and 3 pence were left to Harriett Hannah Smithurst wife of George Smithurst (his married sister)

Military History

Private Hugh Richard Davies, M.M., [1] enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 15th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He landed in France on 21st November 1915 and died at Weymouth Military Hospital on 18th September 1916 of disease. He is buried in Awsworth (St. Peter) Churchyard. Also of Sarah, his beloved wife, who died December 29th 1915 aged 58 years. And of their beloved son, Hugh Richard, who died on active service, September 18th 1916 aged 26 years. Thy will be done.'
