George Brownley was born in Mansfield and was baptised on 13th Febraury 1883 at St John’s church, Mansfield, he was the son of the late Wilfred Brownley an iron foundry labourer and the late Sarah Ellen Brownley née Kershaw of Union Street, Mansfield, his father Wilfred was born in 1858 at Mansfield, he died in 1905 aged 67 yrs, his mother Sarah Ellen Kershaw was born in 1853 at Mansfield, she died in 1887 aged 34 yrs they were married in 1879 at Mansfield they had four further children, James William b1879 Emma b1876, Martha b1884 and Hannah b1885. In the 1911 census George is living at 107 Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, he is a lodger 29 yrs and is a colliery hewer.

Military History

Private George Brownley enlisted at Mansfield on 12th March 1903 he was a labourer, he served with the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, he was in the reserves when war broke out and re enlisted at Beverley he landed in France on 20th September 1914 and was killed in action on 28th October 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
