Ernest Charles Newton was born in 1889 the son of the late Samuel Charles and Ruth Newton née Webber (later Burrows) and the brother of Mabel, Ethel and Beatrice Newton. In 1901 they lived on Howard Row Chard Somerset. Samuel Charles was born in 1867 in Chard, he died in 1902 aged 35 yrs, Ruth Webber was born in 1865 in Chard, married on 21st May 1887 at Chard. Ernest married Irene Mettam (born 2nd May 1890 Stapleford) in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they lived at 59 Lime Grove, Stapleford and had a son Frank born July 1915. Commencing 16th April 1917 Irene Newton was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Rifleman Ernest Charles Newton enlisted at Nottingham. he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, Somme, France.
