Family History

Ernest Hampton Turner was born in 1894, he was the son of Willie a corporation scavenger and Annie Lizzie Turner née Rodgers of 31 Dallas Street, Mansfield. Willie was born in 1867 and Annie Rodgers was born in 1872 both were born in Staveley , married on 7th April 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield Registration district, they had the following children, Maria Ann b1891, Ernest Hampton b1894 and Nellie b1898 all were born at Staveley. In 1911 the family were living at 104 New Victoria Street, Mansfield Willie is 44 yrs and is a corporation scavenger, he is living with his wife Annie Lizzie 39 yrs and their children, Maria Ann 19 yrs a cotton doubler, John William 18 yrs a brick yard labourer, Ernest Hampton 16 yrs a brickyard labourer and Nellie 13 yrs of age. Ernest married Leah Morgan (born 21st August 1891) in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 3 North's Cottages, St James's Street Nottingham and had a daughter Leah born 16th November 1916. Commencing 4th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Ernest Hampton Turner enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Nottingha, he served wit the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed in action on 31st July 1917 and is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium

Extra Information

His brother Private John William Turner enlisted at Mansfield, he serve with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
