Family History

Harry Hopkinson was born in 1892 the son of the late Thomas a coal miner hewer and Ruth Hopkinson née Crossland, 4 Davisons Yard, Kirkby in Ashfield. Thomas was born in 1852 at North Wingfield, Derbyshire, he died in 1911 aged 59 yrs, Ruth Crossland was born in 1855 at Sutton in Ashfield, married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 6 children. Harry married Harriett Ann Fox (born 7th June 1890) in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 79 Chatsworth Street, Sutton in Ashfield. and had two children, Harry born 18th February 1911 and Evelyn born 14th November 1912. In 1911 they lived on Morley Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. Commencing 12th March 1917 his widow Harriett was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Private Harry Hopkinson enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 11899 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the 'Battle of The Somme' having no known grave his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
