George Watson was born in 1895 at Old Basford and was the son of Walter a coal miner and the late Martha Watson née Collier of Vernon Ave, Basford, Nottingham. His father Walter was born in 1865 at Nottingham, his mother Martha Collier was born in 1866 at Northampton, she died in 1899 aged 33 yrs they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They went on to have the following children all born in Nottingham, Walter b1888, Elizabeth b1890, Louisa b1893, George b1895 and Thomas b1897. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Vernon Ave, Basford and are shown as Walter 43 yrs a widow, he is living with his children, Louisa 18 yrs a brass winder, George 16 yrs a lace threader and Thomas 14 yrs a scholar. His legatee was his brother Thomas Watson, of 8, Lambert's Row, St. Peters St., Old Radford, Nottingham.
Private George Watson, enlisted at Nottingham he served in the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action during an attack at Kite Copse on 8th March 1917 he and is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.
In memoriam published 8th March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WATSON. – In loving memory of Pte. G. Watson, killed in action March 8th, 1917.
