Thomas Riley was the son of Joseph Riley Randall and Eliza Ledger who married in the Radford registration district in 1869. His father switched to being known as Joseph Randall Riley after their marriage. Their children included: Mary Ann (b.1870), John (b.1872), Rebecca (b.1875), Thomas (b.1878), Catherine Underwood (b.1880), Randall (b.1883), Fred Ledger (b.1886), Lucy (b.1891), Edward (b.1893) and William (b.1896). The Riley family lived at: Knight Row, Basford [C.1871]; Beardall Street, Hucknall [C.1881]; 43 Brixton Road, Radford [C.1891]; 2 Dulwich Road, Radford [C.1901, C.1911 & CWGC]. Joseph Randall Riley, who was latterly a colliery banksman [C.1911], died at Nottingham, aged 71, in 1921. His wife, Eliza Ann, died in the Basford registration district in 1923, aged 73. In 1909 Thomas Riley married Harriett Eliza Allsopp at Nottingham. Their children included Thomas William (b.1909), a set of twins Randall (b.1913) and William (b.1913) and Joseph Ernest (b.1914). In 1911 the family were living at 6 Bazaine Terrace Baldwin Street, Radford. The post-war address given for his widow in the CWGC records was 15 Grant Street, Radford. She never remarried and died at Nottingham, age 67, in 1947.
He enlisted at Nottingham; killed in action of the first day of the Battle of the Somme; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Private Fred Ledger Riley of the 10th Bn. [King's Own] Yorkshire Light Infantry died of his wounds on 8 November 1917.
