William Radford was born in 1899 John Edward Radford was born in 1899 at Mansfield, he was the son of John James an iron foundry labourer and Jane Radford of 2 Peacock Street, Mansfield. John James was born in 1865 at Mansfield, Jane Radford was born in 1866 at South Normanton they had three children, Florence b1890 Mansfield, William born 1895 Mansfield, John Edward born 1899 Mansfield and Florence In 1911 the family are living at 62 Brownlow Road, Mansfield, John 46 yrs is a labourer in an iron foundry, he is living with his two sons William 16 yrs a driver and John Edward 12 yrs a colliery banksman
Private William Radford enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Mansfield, he served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 28th June 1915. He died of wounds on 15th October 1915 and is buried at Lillers Communal Cemetery, France.
His brother Private John Edward Radford attested on 9th September 1916 at Mansfield giving his age as 17 yrs and 155 days, he was a colliery banksman and resided at 2 Peacock Street, Mansfield he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 17th February 1917 and he landed in France on 2nd April 1918 . He was killed in action on 28th May 1918 and is buried at Rethel French National Cemetery, France.
